In other countries of the world like Brazil, Philippines, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana and Honduras, presidential and legislative elections are held simultaneously under the presidential system.
What will be the benefit of ‘One Nation One Election’?
Due to simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the country, the expenditure on elections will be reduced. In simple language, the election expenditure on government funds will be reduced. Due to which the development works will gain more momentum. Apart from this, there will be no need to repeatedly make arrangements for EVMs at polling stations, security and deployment of employees for elections. This will also help in increasing the participation of common people in the electoral process. Apart from this, by holding elections once, the vote percentage will increase. Let us tell you that this is not the first time that the government is considering the decision of holding simultaneous elections. First of all, the Election Commission had suggested this to the government for the first time in 1983. The idea emerged in the first annual report of the Election Commission of India published that year. After this, this idea came from the Law Commission in 1999. The Law Commission had recommended holding simultaneous elections in its report on electoral reforms. Whereas in 2015, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, in 2017, NITI Aayog and in 2018, the Law Commission headed by Justice BS Chauhan had simultaneously released their draft report on the elections.
